Sapiens Sapiens, 2007
Porcelain, glaze, mother of pearl
225 x 170 x 21 cm
Each piece of Sapiens Sapiens has been cast from a real human skeleton with the exception of the shoulder blades and pelvic bones which have been modified to accommodate four arms and legs of the mutant form. Realized in glazed porcelain with mother of pearl and laid flat between fiction and realism, the piece explores the notion of self and Darwinian quandary. Resembling a crawling animal or a cockroach, the half human, half beast skeleton woefully echoes Kafka’s Metamorphosis.
